The all new Meyerplex, opening Dec 2008

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Update: The projector arrived today (Friday, 12-5)!  So did the cables I ordered.  My first impression, is that it is huge.  The photo below gives the impression that it is a small box.  We’ll it is more like two shoe boxes sitting side-by-side.  I set it up around 6:30 for some initial testing, and the girls came down and watched “The Grinch” starring Jim Carrey, which was on TV tonight.  There is still more tweaking to do, plus I have to mount it to the ceiling, finish trim in the room, install wires, etc.  So today wasn’t the official opening of the Meyerplex, but it is getting close.  Did I mention, that the picture was sweeeet?!

Original Post: All of my renovations in our basement has lead to this one goal, an HD home theater with drop down screen, 1080p projector, and 7.1 surround sound system (sure, I was making a space for the girls to play too, but really, give them a decent sized cardboard box, and they are entertained for hours).  I was not ready to buy the projector quite yet, but the one I wanted went on sale this weekend for a Black Friday special, and I, I mean we, couldn’t pass it up.  Now I need to put that blu-ray player back on my Christmas wish list, and then decide on the title for the first movie to premiere at the Meyerplex.  If you have a suggestion on what it should be, let us know in the comments!

Blogging from my iphone

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Again, my web master extraordinaire Jon, demonstrated his talents by updating our family blog so we can now write posts from the road via my iPhone.
If only this was available at the beginning of the summer, you would have been treated to posts from adventures such as: camping, visiting the Laura Ingalls homestead in MO, and our week vacation with both sides of the family at the cabin. I can even have more timely posts from the basement renovation project (granted that is only two floors away from where the computer is located, so it isn’t like I couldn’t make those posts more often, but the novelty of typing on the iphone might encourage it–afterall, I’m typing on my phone right now, and I’m sitting at my computer desk).

I can even post photos from the phone. Here are some gems that the girls took when playing with the phone on our recent car trips. The world of journalism will never be the same.  Peace out.

Milestones of invention: A complete history

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Fire : palaeolithic man

Wheel : neolithic man

Moveable type printing press : Johannes Gutenberg

iPhone : Steve Jobs

As of today, I have had the pleasure to use all four of these inventions. And I have found that the most significant invention in all of human history is clearly the iPhone.  Fire comes in as a close second.

Cable Modem update

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Jon,

I checked out the speed test site you sent me. Here were my results:

Download speed: 173 Kb/s

Upload speed: 92 Kb/s

Pretty shabby huh?  Earlier, I tested a download speed around 325 Kb/s, but a few minutes later it was closer to the number above.  The Mooseheart system brings the signal in by satelite, and then distributes it to the homes by the cable network.  Our house might be near the end of the line, which could explain the slow speeds.

So how will these speeds do with videoconferencing?

No more dial-up!

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Mooseheart finally installed a cable modem system on campus, and it was hooked up today.  It isn’t the fastest, but at least we are no longer using dial-up.

I called Jenny from the office and asked if it was faster.  Her reply, “I don’t know…it still took a long time to connect.”  Um, that would be because you  still dialed-up with the phone line.  Silly tech-ignorant person.

Our new toy

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Well, we took the plunge.  I hope we get a lot of use out of this D-SLR before it becomes obsolete sometime next month!  We paired up the D40x body with an 18-200mm super zoom lens.   That’s one big honkin’ lens.
