My Mooseheart Journal, from 11 years ago!

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

When cleaning out old files, I came across this journal I started when Jenny and I just began at Mooseheart as Houseparents.  We had just graduated college, and then got married, went on our honeymoon, and came to mooseheart a week later.  The Journal only covered the first week or so.  I started it after our second day, because I quickly realized how weird this experience was going to be.  Keep in mind, that Mooseheart is a different place now, although I do see some simalarities in these early observations with how current Family Teachers may view the organization.

“It is our second night here and we just completed our first day of training.  Earlier in the day, we were told by our CCM [Supervisor] that the Houseparent hwo has been running Oregon Home gave his resignation.  And in winding down his last few weeks here, he let the chores and the discipline in the house slip to the point where the house was unlivable for the kids.  Therefore, we were told that Mooseheart plans to move us into Oregon Home, but they will move all of the kids out.  After we have a chance to clean it up, they will put a new group of high schoolers in there.  Jeny was very happy with this news, because we could now get our feet wet withouth sasting any of the the critical first days with our residents. “It was another pleasant day with our trainer, Mary Harding.  For lunch we attended the monthly picnic at the fieldhouse.  Mary told us we would be introduced to the whole community, with a simple save to the crowd, called the ‘new employee wave.’

“We took a tour of the clothing store and learned about ordering clothes and how to send the home’s linens to the cleaners. (more…)

“Training consisted of visiting all of the main structures here, including the House of God, Moose International, Central Kitchen, Hortaculture Department, Residential Living, etc.

“I got a call from my family to supposedly cheer us up.  (more…)

[This was the last entry]

“Yesterday, I got another call from the principal as Sandburg Jr. High.  She asked me to come in for an interview for a science position.  I couldn’t believe it.  I really wanted that opportunity, but I had already committed myself to Mooseheart.  I don’t know if the idea of traditional teaching sounds better to me now, or if it is just because I am emotionally attached to Sandburg.  I remember Mr. Sample and Mr. Fowler, who I really looked up to. Cornell vs. Mooseheart, May1999

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Jenny has packed 72 boxes thus far.  I started to pack my first box, which contained old files, and thought my time would be better spent purging those materials.  I came across a document that I wrote in May 1999, when I was trying to decide if I wanted to return to Mooseheart after my Masters Degree, or work at Cornell University.  I had a third choice, which was to start my Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, as I was already accepted to three schools, Iowa State, Indiana U., and University of Georgia.  But of the three paths in front of me at the time, that was the first one I decided not to pursue.

As everyone knows, I chose Cornell over Mooseheart, which I know was the right choice at the time.  However, it was just two years later, that I came back to the Heart of the Moose.  It must have just kept calling me…   thump thump…   thump thump…  thump thump…

Anyway, back to the point of this post, click through to read my comparison notes regarding this decision. (more…)

Another one bites the dust

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Most of my readers know of my good friend and coworker Ric.  Well he announced today that he is also leaving Mooseheart.  Something about how life just couldn’t go on with out me working here.

Actually, he accepted a Director of Residential position at Girls and Boys Country in Houston, TX.  Congratulations Ric!  Sherry always wanted to live somewhere warm, but crimeinetly, freaking Texas?

Career Change, Home, Finances, Safety, Baby

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Of the top six life stressors (things most likely to cause one to spontaneously erupt an  episode of manic depression so severe that their brain and gut could actually explode), Jenny and I are experiencing five simultaneously.  Seriously.

I think this explains why although things keep going our way, we have yet to feel excitement or joy.  Each completed step, while providing relief, simply points out all of the remaining things for us to get done.

The sixth stressor is health, which most likely will be an issue for us as well if we can’t get control of these first five stressors.

For those not in the know, I have accepted an Operations Director position with the Illinois PBIS Network, which is a state grant aimed at assisting public schools on developing best practices in their behavior management and social skill development programs.

Oddly enough, Mooseheart then surprised us by saying that if I no longer work here, I will have to move out of the house.   This really took us by surprise.  Then I tried to sell the house, but Realtors wouldn’t take me seriously since apparently I don’t own it.  I just assumed that possession is 9/10ths of the law, and therefore perhaps my argument would hold up in court.  Oh well.

Alright then, lets move…    But to where?

After a couple weeks working with my Aunt Karen, real estate agent extraordinaire, we decided to move to Naperville, IL.  In typical fashion, Jenny wasn’t initially on board with this destination, so I had to use my tried and true “wear down” technique of negotiation.  Since she is pregnant, and otherwise emotionally fragile, I was able to break her will in almost record time.

In then end, we have found a house we are happy with, altough it will need some work. If everything goes well.  We should have plumbing by ‘09.  I know it doesn’t look like much, but we’ve been watching flip shows non-stop, and know that with just a little landscaping, this could look like a king’s estate.

But on to the important part, here is our dream home:

Just like little house on the praire!

We would like to thank all the people that helped to make our first home possible: my mother’s estate, the bank of dad, and all the countless people that will be purchasing all of our belongings on Ebay to fund this venture.  Be sure to check out our sale, especially the “Brian’s used boxer shorts” category.

We have to move by mid-August, which gives us just three-and-a-half weeks to pack everything up.  We were going to use movers for just our furniture, but we spent that money in the mortgage.  Seriously.

So there you have it.  A new career, home move, financially strapped,  public community (the safety concern), and all with a baby on the way.  Excuse me while I go throw u—

Change is in the air

Friday, July 6th, 2007

OK. This is my third draft of this post. I realize that considering the public nature of the net, I don’t want to post any info that is really just meant for family members. So if you are not a family member or close friend of mine. Stop reading.

Alright then, now I can assume we have some privacy. Family and friends, it looks like change is going to happen for the Meyer family.  We expect to have all the details worked out by the middle of next week.

If you want more detail than that (or any detail really, since I provided absolutely none in this post, you’ll have to call us (or call Larry or Leo and Joyce who are also in the loop).

By-the-way, we start our Laura Ingalls Wilder tour of South Dakota tomorrow morning, and will be gone all next week! Bonnets for everyone! Sadly, I do not own an iPhone, so I will not be able to check email or the web during this time. I know. It is truly like how the early settlers lived. But I am pretty sure they had cell phones, so feel free to call us if you’d like.

Cable Modem update

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Jon,

I checked out the speed test site you sent me. Here were my results:

Download speed: 173 Kb/s

Upload speed: 92 Kb/s

Pretty shabby huh?  Earlier, I tested a download speed around 325 Kb/s, but a few minutes later it was closer to the number above.  The Mooseheart system brings the signal in by satelite, and then distributes it to the homes by the cable network.  Our house might be near the end of the line, which could explain the slow speeds.

So how will these speeds do with videoconferencing?
