Milestones of invention: A complete history

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Fire : palaeolithic man

Wheel : neolithic man

Moveable type printing press : Johannes Gutenberg

iPhone : Steve Jobs

As of today, I have had the pleasure to use all four of these inventions. And I have found that the most significant invention in all of human history is clearly the iPhone.  Fire comes in as a close second.

Jill Johnson’s Banana Nut Syrup Recipe

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

As promised, here is Jill’s Banana Nut Syrup Recipe. I added it to the fronza.net database. I should have said it was from Jill, but I took full credit for it. Jon can you edit that?

I made it tonight for our dinner of cinnamon and chocolate chip pancakes. Jenny and I actually went on a walk after dinner, because we felt our arteries hardening.

Meyer Mermaids posing in front of the reef tank

We took Grammy and Grampy Fronza to the Shedd for a late father’s day celebration today. The Meyer Mermaids posed in front of the Caribbean reef tank as we were leaving. The queen mermaid on the left says she is feeling “really” pregnant lately. But she still looks great for being five months now.

Kimodo sniffing out the girls

This time, the Komodo Dragon was out, and the girls were able to get right up close to it. See where Olivia’s hand is on the glass? The Komodo was trying to sniff out her hand by flicking its tongue right at her palm. There is another photo I took from the other side, where you can see the tongue just starting to come out. This is one scary lizzard. The girls loved it. Here are a few other photos from the trip:

A ginormous fish trying to eat Olivia’s head–it didn’t scare her one bit “Hey look! Another fish!” A better shot of the fish that wanted to eat Olivia…it was huge!

Closer shot of the Komodo…it weighs around 120 pounds! Mmmm… Olivia’s palm is tasty.

Cable Modem update

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Jon,

I checked out the speed test site you sent me. Here were my results:

Download speed: 173 Kb/s

Upload speed: 92 Kb/s

Pretty shabby huh?  Earlier, I tested a download speed around 325 Kb/s, but a few minutes later it was closer to the number above.  The Mooseheart system brings the signal in by satelite, and then distributes it to the homes by the cable network.  Our house might be near the end of the line, which could explain the slow speeds.

So how will these speeds do with videoconferencing?

Journey’s comeback? They never went away!

The greatest of greatest hits albums!

We saw a news story that said after “Don’t Stop Believing” was featured in the Soprano’s series finale, Journey’s music was making a major comeback. Fair weather fans. As Jenny pointed out, we brought two copies of the “Journey’s Greatest Hits” album into this marriage.

We listened to it this morning during breakfast. After Jenny broke out into dance, Gracie said, “Mommy, you’re freaking me out!”

Somehow, this segued into a conversation about tattoos and piercings. Jenny went with the angle of, “You don’t see grandmothers with nose piercings, so you probably don’t ever want to do something like that.” Sure Jenny. That will work.

The girls did ask for the complete list of what could be pierced, so we told them: ears, nose, tongue, eyebrow, lip, and bellybutton.

Emma, “So those are the only places?”

Parents, “Yes. No others!”

No more dial-up!

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Mooseheart finally installed a cable modem system on campus, and it was hooked up today.  It isn’t the fastest, but at least we are no longer using dial-up.

I called Jenny from the office and asked if it was faster.  Her reply, “I don’t know…it still took a long time to connect.”  Um, that would be because you  still dialed-up with the phone line.  Silly tech-ignorant person.

The Dunes at Grand Haven, MI

Monday, June 18th, 2007

We went camping with Greg, Jill, Hayden (4 years old), and Gaven (2 years old) at the dunes in Grand Haven Michigan this past weekend.  The state park there was great.  The camping area had a trail that led to a secluded beach.  The weather was 80 degrees, and the lake was 68.  The girls loved climbing the dunes.  Even Olivia liked climbing up, and sliding down on her belly.  We are still finding sand in numerous areas.

Here are some photos.  There were more of Jenny and I swimming with the girls, but it looked like someone put our heads on our parent’s bodies.  So those photos didn’t pass the censorship committee.

Gracie’s “new” bed

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Jenny was very concerned that if we didn’t get Gracie’s bed painted soon, it would get too hot, and then I wouldn’t want to do it (she was right). So we spent the better part of this Saturday and Sunday painting it. Jenny manned the roller, and I had the touch-up brush. It took one coat of primer, and three coats of paint! Perhaps if we put two coats of primer on, it wouldn’t have needed the third coat of paint.

Gracie had a hard time understanding why it wasn’t done… so she kept asking… every five minutes or so… for two straight days. She even resorted to sitting in a lawn chair by the garage door, so she could just keep asking without having to walk anywhere.

I hope uncle Jeff didn’t want his childhood bed. But we think we’ll only need this bed for around 5 years or so. So if you do bridge the gap in that time, don’t worry, we can talk about it.

We’ll post a final picture when the bed is decorated (with princesses of course) and put together.

Doesn’t Grace look thrilled?

Happy Anniversary

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Jenny and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary last week. To mark this special occasion, I gave Jenny and old shirt. I know. Big spender.

But, it was a mint condition 8th grade 1988 Sandburg Jr. High T-shirt, that was recovered from my parent’s house. That was the year we started dating, making this our 19th year together. The shirt has the signatures from all of the students in our class that year.

If you look closely, you can see Jenny’s signature is third column from the left, tenth down. My signature is in the last column, 13th down. (Click on the photo to enlarge it, or download it to your computer for full size)

For the rest of you 1988 Sandburg grads out there, if you can’t find your name, let me know and I’ll find it for you.
