It is done!

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

At  6:00 this evening, my Aunt Karen called and said she finally had a contract from Hewitt Associates LLC (the relocation company who owns our house).  We agreed to a price with them last Thursday, but they then took FIVE days to sign the contract.  Dealing with this company was a joke  to say the least.  An absolute miserable experience.  We know that everyone feels stress when buying their first home, but I would hope our experience with this company was just an isolated situation.

But, it is time to move on.  The house is the one pictured in the post titled “Welcome Home.”  The closing is scheduled for August 10th. Perfect timing for all of Jenny’s brothers and sisters-in-law to muscle up and pitch in.  Meridith, you’re on closets and crafts.  Jeff and James, furniture.  Sarah, bring your grid paper to tell us what walls in the new home need to be knocked down and/or moved.  Jon, carry out Sarah’s vision in about 12 hours or so.  Jeremy, get your butt back to Chicago and help out your family.

Scot and Sharon, you live in Naperville, so we expect you two to grease the right hands to avoid any complications for us.  Oh, and you’re moving furniture too.

Any questions?  No?  Good.

Move over Maserati

Check out my new wheels!  My cousin called because he was planning on trading in his car.  It happened to be the model I was looking for, a 98 Toyota Camry, with around 120,000 miles.  It was a huge win-win for both of us.  At just over $2000, I expect it to last me for 15 years or so.

I shall call it, my DeLorean.

Now if I can just get the doors to open like wings

Still waiting

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Well, the weekend is here, and we haven’t received a contract from the relocation company.  Therefore, our house deal isn’t done yet.  This means we have to wait until Monday morning now.  I don’t know how they expect us to stick to our closing time line if they don’t sign the contract.  Arrrrgghh!

To escrow, or not to escrow

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Your opinion please!

[Option 1] When we close on our mortgage, we have the choice to put our monthly tax payment in escrow.  This is free to do, but we aren’t able to earn interest on the money while it sits in the bank’s wallet.

Or, [Option 2] we can pay a fee up front, to not use escrow, and then save that money ourselves during the year.  Doing so would allow us to collect interest in a money market account, which would cancel out the fee after one-and-a-half to two years.

The finances suggest that we go with option number two.  And I know we are disciplined enough to put the money away.  But what else am I missing?  Let me know.

Welcome home

It’s not 100% until we receive the contract (which is what happened when the last house fell through), but it sounds like we have reached a sale price agreement for our new home!   We’ll post again with more details when the deal is done.  The home is located in Naperville.

Game back on!

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Jenny and I have been out every night, with Aunt Karen, and we exhausted all possibilities in Naperville.  Leo then suggested that we look into renting until we found a house.  I never thought of myself as a renter, but that idea is much better than settling on a house we don’t really like.

Today, when we were planning to go look at rentals, another house was just posted because their deal fell through.  We went over there right after work, and are pretty excited about the house, and its possibilities.  So we are going to try this again, and see if we can reach a deal.  We’ll keep everyone posted.

Oh, and the good news is that the house is vacant, so we can move in as soon as the paperwork is done!

We have a new home! …er, we lost our new home

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

We settled on a price on our new home Saturday morning.  We received a call late Sunday night stating that, “the owners have changed their minds.”  No explanation.  No details.  Nothing.  Their real estate agent isn’t even retuning my Aunt’s calls.  The rollercoaster of negotiating a price was excruciating.  Now with this twist, everything is a mess.

Good times.

Career Change, Home, Finances, Safety, Baby

Of the top six life stressors (things most likely to cause one to spontaneously erupt an  episode of manic depression so severe that their brain and gut could actually explode), Jenny and I are experiencing five simultaneously.  Seriously.

I think this explains why although things keep going our way, we have yet to feel excitement or joy.  Each completed step, while providing relief, simply points out all of the remaining things for us to get done.

The sixth stressor is health, which most likely will be an issue for us as well if we can’t get control of these first five stressors.

For those not in the know, I have accepted an Operations Director position with the Illinois PBIS Network, which is a state grant aimed at assisting public schools on developing best practices in their behavior management and social skill development programs.

Oddly enough, Mooseheart then surprised us by saying that if I no longer work here, I will have to move out of the house.   This really took us by surprise.  Then I tried to sell the house, but Realtors wouldn’t take me seriously since apparently I don’t own it.  I just assumed that possession is 9/10ths of the law, and therefore perhaps my argument would hold up in court.  Oh well.

Alright then, lets move…    But to where?

After a couple weeks working with my Aunt Karen, real estate agent extraordinaire, we decided to move to Naperville, IL.  In typical fashion, Jenny wasn’t initially on board with this destination, so I had to use my tried and true “wear down” technique of negotiation.  Since she is pregnant, and otherwise emotionally fragile, I was able to break her will in almost record time.

In then end, we have found a house we are happy with, altough it will need some work. If everything goes well.  We should have plumbing by ‘09.  I know it doesn’t look like much, but we’ve been watching flip shows non-stop, and know that with just a little landscaping, this could look like a king’s estate.

But on to the important part, here is our dream home:

Just like little house on the praire!

We would like to thank all the people that helped to make our first home possible: my mother’s estate, the bank of dad, and all the countless people that will be purchasing all of our belongings on Ebay to fund this venture.  Be sure to check out our sale, especially the “Brian’s used boxer shorts” category.

We have to move by mid-August, which gives us just three-and-a-half weeks to pack everything up.  We were going to use movers for just our furniture, but we spent that money in the mortgage.  Seriously.

So there you have it.  A new career, home move, financially strapped,  public community (the safety concern), and all with a baby on the way.  Excuse me while I go throw u—

Change is in the air

Friday, July 6th, 2007

OK. This is my third draft of this post. I realize that considering the public nature of the net, I don’t want to post any info that is really just meant for family members. So if you are not a family member or close friend of mine. Stop reading.

Alright then, now I can assume we have some privacy. Family and friends, it looks like change is going to happen for the Meyer family.  We expect to have all the details worked out by the middle of next week.

If you want more detail than that (or any detail really, since I provided absolutely none in this post, you’ll have to call us (or call Larry or Leo and Joyce who are also in the loop).

By-the-way, we start our Laura Ingalls Wilder tour of South Dakota tomorrow morning, and will be gone all next week! Bonnets for everyone! Sadly, I do not own an iPhone, so I will not be able to check email or the web during this time. I know. It is truly like how the early settlers lived. But I am pretty sure they had cell phones, so feel free to call us if you’d like.
